How to Use Washable Mixing Medium in Painting Decorative Crafts
Kids love arts. That is something undeniable. Through art, they are able to express their thoughts and feelings. They also develop critical thinking skills and ways to interpret things. That is why art class is always present in most school curriculums. Painting is one of the activities in art lessons. The children paint on papers, canvas, fabrics and paper mâché. But of course, the safety of children as they go about with their art projects should be top priority so that nontoxic materials have to be used.
In children art classes, washable paints such as watercolors, liquid watercolors, fingerpaints and tempera paints are the ones commonly used. This coming holiday season, making decorative crafts are surely in the list. To give more texture and impact on the painted craft, mixing mediums are used. Due supervision must be extended when using supplies since kids are the end users. Thus, below are some tips on how to use washable mixing medium when painting school crafts.
Make sure that all supplies are prepared before the start of activity. Tools and materials needed for the painting activity include paintbrushes and the preferred paint; easel, palette and jars. If the teacher is the one providing the supplies, distributing them separately in a bag will be easier and assure that everyone gets to have one. If the kids were to bring their own, make sure to give the list of supplies days before the activity.
Prepare the paints you will need in your palette. Paint your craft with pure paint as desired. Then leave it to dry.
Take out a baby-food size jar. Open your preferred mixing medium and slowly pour it into the jar. Pour just enough to cover the bottom of the jar.
Get a clean brush and dip its tips in the medium. Next, dip the brush into the paint in your palette. Carefully mix the medium and pure paint in the palette. The thickness should be the same as the pure paint without the medium.
Test paint on paper to review if you were able to obtain the effect desired. Once approved, continue to paint your craft. If you have another medium, follow the same procedures in step 1 to 4. Just make sure that you use a different clean paint brush for each.
Once done painting. Set aside the craft to dry. You will notice that there are changes in texture and effects on your crafts using the medium.
Painting is a fun activity to do during art class. You can make it even more fun by using mixing mediums into the washable paints. You can glitter up, gloss or give you crafts a smooth and rough look.
